Rome
Our apartment in Rome had air conditioning (see the unit above Austin?) and two TVs : )
Blake liked the loft bed in the apartment
The Pantheon dwarfs the boys!! Can't believe how OLD this place is!!
We tossed our coins over our shoulder into the Trevi Fountain so perhaps we'll be back?
St. Peter's in Vatican City was so very impressive. We even attended a mass here (it was in Latin so we left early!) and enjoyed the men's choir.
The Vatican museum is huge! We had to sit when we could!! By following the advice in Rick Steve's guidebooks, we missed all the huge lines in Italy.
We got to see a varied selection of art (apparently 4 miles of art!) before ending up in the Sistine Chapel.
We celebrated Blake's 11th birthday in Rome! We chose this restaurant because they advertised "cake" on their board in front, but it turned out that they didn't have any! Oh well! It was still delicious!
The top of the Spanish Steps (the Obelisk is covered w/ scaffolding) offers a nice view of Rome.
At the base of the Spanish Steps is the Sinking Boat fountain. Garrett & Blake cooled off in the fountain, until a plainclothes officer asked them to get out. They were nice and cool...
Mike & Phyllis at the fountain (we didn't get in)
We took buses and the metro to get around in Rome. Around the Colosseum grounds we picnic'd on Palatin hill (pictured) where the emperors' palaces ruins are...
... and looked for shade in the Forum area...
...before ending up at the grand Colosseum!
Blake and Garrett were very interested in the history of this place. They had displays which demonstrated how the animals were brought up from the cages below with pulley systems and trap doors. What a vicious time in history...
Each country has their own system for getting tickets for the buses and metro. It can be a challenge to figure it all out! We took a bus and metro to get out to the Catacombs along the Appian way. It was interesting and cool underground in the Catacomb : )
The boys declared that the sausage pizza from a nearby restaurant was the best in the world. Mike and I went out on a date while the boys ate pizza at the apartment...

Wow! All these fabulous places, all these great memories, all these awesome adventures -- a truly remarkable trip.
You must have been exhausted by the end of your time there!
Awesome pictures--I remember that McDonald's from when I was in Germany--it made me feel like I was back home. I'd love to know what Mike's, Austin's, Garrett's & Blake's highlights were too! The coliseum in Rome looks awesome--totally chilling & mind boggling what took place there.
